| SACRAMENTO, CA — Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez (R-Indio) announced this week that AB 2022, his legislation to expand property tax relief for California’s disabled veterans and surviving spouses, has passed the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee and will now move to the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee for further consideration. AB 2022 would expand property tax exemptions for qualifying disabled veterans and surviving spouses, helping veterans living on fixed incomes remain in their homes while recognizing their service and sacrifice. Recent amendments were taken to address a gap in the previous version of the measure that would have resulted in some veterans receiving a lower exemption than what exists today, ensuring they are not disadvantaged under the updated framework. The bill previously passed the Assembly with unanimous bipartisan support. “As a Marine Corps combat veteran and only veteran serving in the Assembly, I know the sacrifices our service members and their families make long after the uniform comes off,” said Assemblyman Gonzalez. “Our disabled veterans have already paid a price most Californians will never be asked to pay. The least we can do is ensure they are not taxed out of the homes they fought to protect. California should be the best state in the nation for veterans to live, work, raise a family, and retire, and AB 2022 helps move us closer to that goal by providing meaningful financial relief to those who have earned it. Veterans put service before self every day they wear the uniform, and I will continue fighting to make sure California keeps its promise to those who have served.” |
