Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez Disabled Veterans Property Tax Relief Bill Advances in Senate

SACRAMENTO, CA — Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez (R-Indio) announced today that AB 2022, his legislation to expand property tax relief for California’s disabled veterans and surviving spouses, has passed the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee and will continue advancing through the legislative process.

“As a Marine Corps combat veteran, I know firsthand that the cost of service doesn’t end when a veteran comes home,” said Assemblyman Gonzalez. “The men and women who risked everything to defend our country have earned more than our gratitude. The least we can do is ensure they can afford to stay in the homes they worked so hard to build. AB 2022 is about keeping our promise to those who served and providing meaningful relief to disabled veterans and their families.”

The bill previously passed the Assembly with unanimous bipartisan support.

AB 2022 now moves to Senate Appropriations for consideration.

Background

AB 2022 would expand property tax exemptions for qualifying disabled veterans and surviving spouses, helping veterans living on fixed incomes remain in their homes while recognizing their service and sacrifice. Amendments taken in the Senate also addressed a gap in current law that could have resulted in some veterans receiving a lower exemption than what exists today, ensuring veterans are not disadvantaged under the updated framework.
